Today, something exciting happened, and I’d like to explain how it unfolded.

In December 2023, I was approached by the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet Major Events Team to assist in planning and facilitating a unique, face-to-face Risk Exercise for Sydney New Year’s stakeholders. The goal was to test and improve their readiness for the challenges that arise in major events.

Over 60 people participated in the exercise, building their awareness, trust, and understanding of how they could support one another when such challenges occur. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and the exercise format was well-received.

The experience was shared with a Senior Lecturer at the Business School of University of NSW Centre for Social Impact Leadership cohort, and before I knew it, I was invited to present to them today via Zoom.

My presentation focused on Evolving Leadership, a key theme of my book, The Courage to Lead – Resilience and Compassion in Police Command,. I highlighted how to prepare for leadership roles in high-stakes situations, like the Mosman Collar Bomb and the first two hours of the Lindt Cafe Siege. I emphasized the importance of continuous practice and collaboration with stakeholders to better prepare our people, partner agencies, and communities for future challenges.

Additionally, I discussed the formation of strong teams that empower individuals and foster inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Here are some snapshots from today, including the whiteboard debrief where the students analyzed a complex case like the Collar Bomb.

A special thank you to Lee Cooper and UNSW for trusting me with your students today. It was wonderful to see key takeaways emerge during their debrief.
